Can you do your driver license renewal in Georgia online?
Yes, if you're at least 18, a Georgia resident and a U.S. citizen, and your current license is a REAL ID with a gold or black star. If you're 64 or older, you also need an approved vision report on file, or you can upload one from an eye doctor dated within two years.
- You can't renew online if your license is suspended, cancelled or revoked.
- You can't renew online to change your photo, height, weight or a restriction code.
- If your citizenship status has changed since your last renewal, you must go in person.
Renewing in person or by mail
In person, submit the online form first, bring your current license and be ready for a new photo. If your license has the REAL ID star and your name and address haven't changed, you usually don't need your documents again. No appointment is needed.
Renewal by mail is only for U.S. citizens who can't renew in person. It takes about 30 days once DDS has your full package, so mail it at least 60 days before your license expires.
Vision rules at 64 and older
From 64, you take a vision screening at every renewal. The standard is the same as for new drivers: 20/60 in at least one eye, with or without glasses, and a 140-degree field of vision. You can take it at any center.
If your license has already expired
You can renew a license that's been expired for less than 2 years. After 2 years or more, you start over with the Road Signs, Road Rules and road skills tests and a vision exam. The new license can take up to 45 days to arrive in the mail.
