Georgia driving license requirements by age

Georgia driving license requirements depend on your age. Teens go through three steps: a Class CP learner's permit at 15, a Class D provisional license at 16 after a year and a day with the permit, and a full Class C license at 18. If you're 18 or older and new to driving, you still pass the knowledge exam and get a permit before your road test.

What are the Georgia driving license requirements for each class?

Fees are as of October 2026. Georgia also has classes for motorcycles (Class M), heavier non-commercial vehicles (Classes E and F) and commercial vehicles (Classes A, B and C CDL).

Getting a Class D license at 16 or 17

  • Hold your Class CP permit for at least 1 year and 1 day, with no major violation that got it suspended.
  • Meet Joshua's Law: a 30-hour driver's education course plus behind-the-wheel training, and 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 at night.
  • Complete ADAP or the free online eADAP.
  • Show proof of school enrollment, or a diploma or GED if you're not enrolled.
  • Book and pass the road test, with a parent, guardian or responsible adult there to sign.

Getting a Class C license at 18 or older

If you already have a Class D, you can upgrade to Class C at 18 through DDS Online Services or the DDS 2 GO app. If you've never been licensed, you get a learner's permit first, then take the road test with a signed affidavit of 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 at night. You pass a vision exam either way.
