HiSET accommodations: what’s available and how to ask

PSI offers HiSET accommodations for test takers with disabilities or health-related needs, under the Americans with Disabilities Act. A few items need no approval, but most HiSET accommodations, like extra time or a separate room, must be approved before you book. Make a myHiSET account first, then send the online request form.

Allowed without approval

  • Transparent overlays and a plain straightedge for keeping your place
  • Earplugs not attached to any device
  • A handheld magnifier with no memory or camera
  • A seat cushion, back pillow or footstool, checked by staff
  • Prescription medication, unwrapped unless it must stay in its packaging
  • Service animals and medical devices such as an inhaler, hearing aid or insulin pump
  • A highlighter or black felt pen for the essay and scratch work

HiSET accommodations that need approval

  • Extended time or extra supervised breaks
  • A separate room
  • Recorded audio, large print or screen magnification
  • A calculator or talking calculator
  • A scribe or keyboard entry aide
  • Sign language interpreted instructions

That list isn’t complete. You can ask for other accommodations through the same process.

How do you request HiSET accommodations?

  1. Create your myHiSET account. Requests can’t be approved without one.
  2. Get a letter on letterhead from the medical authority or school that made the diagnosis, with your name, the disability and its limits on testing, the accommodation recommended, and the specialist’s name, title, phone number and original signature. Expired IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) are accepted.
  3. Send it with PSI’s online accommodations request form. Requests by phone aren’t accepted.
  4. Wait for PSI’s email approving or denying the request.
  5. If approved, book through PSI’s accommodations team: 1-800-367-1565, extension 6750, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.

Missing documents slow the process down and can lead to a denial.
