HiSET in Iowa: enroll in adult education first

Iowa has two steps before you can book: enroll in the adult education program at one of Iowa’s 15 community colleges, and take the official half-length HiSET practice test. The test center checks both, and turns you away without them. After that, a HiSET Iowa subtest costs $18 at a test center or $41 at home, and you don’t need to live in Iowa.

How do you take the HiSET in Iowa?

  1. Enroll in adult education at an Iowa community college. How much instruction you need depends on the testing center.
  2. Take the official half-length practice test through your program and keep the proof. It’s checked on test day.
  3. Create your account through Iowa’s myHiSET login and book a subtest.
  4. Bring valid, unexpired ID. Outdated ID isn’t accepted.

Age rules in Iowa

At 18 or older there are no special conditions. Under 18 you need a drop form or proof you’re not enrolled, plus an age waiver. From 16 years and 9 months you can test if you’re not in an Iowa state training school or juvenile home and not under probation supervision, but your diploma waits until you’re 18 and your 9th grade class has graduated. At 16, only residents of an Iowa juvenile institution, people under juvenile probation supervision and Job Corps participants can test.

Retakes and scores in Iowa

Each subtest can be taken up to three times in a calendar year. Two retakes in the 12 months after your first try are included, but at home you still pay the $23 proctor fee. After three, you wait until January and pay the full price.

Iowa’s HiSET scores expire after five years, so the report in your HiSET account doesn’t show your Iowa credential status. Iowa’s credential database does.
