HiSET practice test: the official free tests for every subtest

HiSET publishes free practice tests for Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies, in English and Spanish. Each official HiSET practice test is half the length of the real subtest and comes with the directions and an answer key. There’s also a free computer-based version of each, 30 to 45 minutes long, that explains your wrong answers, in English only.

Which HiSET practice test should you take?

HiSET sorts its practice tests into four kinds. The free ones are open to anyone. The official ones go through adult education programs.

KindLengthCostLanguages
Free practice tests (FPT)Half of a subtestFreeEnglish, Spanish
Computer-based practice tests30 to 45 minutesFreeEnglish
Paid practice tests (PPT)Half or full lengthNot listedEnglish, Spanish
Official practice tests (OPT)Half or full lengthThrough adult educationNot listed

The paid tests add explanations of each answer. HiSET’s resource library lists them but doesn’t show a price on that page.

Free HiSET practice tests by subject

Each subject has its own set, so you can practice only what you’re booking next. The newest free version is FPT9, and older versions FPT8, FPT7 and FPT6A are still listed.

The real Reading and Social Studies subtests are built around passages, maps and charts, so practice reading those quickly. For math, keep HiSET’s formula sheet beside you, since you get one on test day. For the Writing essay, use HiSET’s scored samples and scoring guide.

HiSET names its practice tests by version, not by year, and lists the current versions on its practice tests page.

How do you know if you’re ready?

Count your right answers and look them up in HiSET’s “Are You Ready?” chart, which has a row for every practice test version. It gives four levels: not yet prepared, somewhat prepared, prepared and well prepared.

For example, on the free half-length math test FPT9, 13 or more right is well prepared and 7 or fewer is not yet prepared, in the chart dated October 2025. Wrong answers don’t cost you anything on the real test, so answer every question when you practice too.
