What do the HiSET essay examples show?
The full sample prompt with both articles, then one response at each score, so you can see how a 2 differs from a 4. Each level starts with a short description of what essays at that score do.
The real essay works the same way. It’s part of the Language Arts Writing subtest, which also has 60 multiple-choice questions, all in 120 minutes. You read a pair of texts that take different sides on an issue, then write an essay with your own position. You support it with evidence from the texts and with reasons and examples from your own experience.
The HiSET essay scoring guide, level by level
- 1: little understanding of the topic, copies ideas from the texts, errors make it hard to follow
- 2: an unclear position, few relevant reasons, serious errors that can get in the way
- 3: a position that may be vague, uneven support, some problems with organization and language
- 4: a generally clear position with relevant support, adequate organization, some errors
- 5: a clear, considered position, well developed and organized, with minor errors
- 6: a clear, well-considered position, well reasoned throughout, with minor errors at most
A summary of HiSET’s Writing Response Scoring Guide. You need at least 2 to pass Writing, and 4 counts toward a college and career readiness score.
How to plan your essay
- Read the prompt and directions first, so you know exactly what to answer.
- Pick a side and say it clearly.
- Outline your key points before you write.
- Use evidence from both texts, in your own words, plus an example from your life.
- Leave time to reread, answer every part of the prompt and fix unclear sentences.
