Taking the HiSET test online at home

Yes, in most states you can take the HiSET test online, from home, while a proctor watches through your webcam. HiSET calls it HiSET Test at Home, and PSI runs it. You need a desktop or laptop, PSI’s secure browser, a private room and a smartphone as a second camera. In the states that list both prices, testing at home costs more than a test center.

Where can’t you take the HiSET test online?

  • Massachusetts: not offered at the moment
  • Maine: not offered
  • Indiana: suspended since July 1, 2025, except for adult education students who qualify for modified testing
  • New Hampshire: not if you’re under 18
  • Montana: ended on September 1, 2025
  • The Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands: their HiSET pages list no at-home option

Hawaii’s HiSET page lists an at-home price, but HiSET’s FAQ says Hawaii doesn’t offer online-proctored tests. Check your myHiSET account for what you can actually book.

What you need for HiSET Test at Home

  • A desktop or laptop with a webcam and microphone. Tablets, phones, Chromebooks and iPads can’t be used.
  • PSI’s secure browser, installed at least 30 minutes before you start
  • A smartphone on Wi-Fi, on a stand, set to do not disturb. Without one you can’t test at home.
  • A quiet, well-lit, private room with nobody else in it
  • A whiteboard and dry erase marker, since scratch paper isn’t allowed
  • A government photo ID. Military IDs aren’t accepted at home.

Rules during an at-home test

The proctor watches the whole time, the session is recorded, and you talk to the proctor by chat. There are no breaks. Looking away from the screen, talking or mumbling, leaving the camera’s view or touching your face can end the test.

If you start more than 30 minutes after your booked time, you may not be let in and you lose the fee. Book at least 24 hours ahead; you can pick any time of day or night.

What testing at home costs

You pay the test fee plus a remote proctor fee, which is $23 a subtest in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania and $17.50 in Missouri. That makes one at-home subtest $41 in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, against $26 at a test center there. The proctor fee is charged again if you retake at home.
