HiSET testing centers: finding one and what to expect

HiSET’s Find a Test Center or Program tool on hiset.org shows test centers and adult education programs near an address. Each HiSET testing center chooses whether to offer the test on paper, on computer or both, and in some states you book through the center itself rather than online.

  • Paper or computerFormat, depending on the center

How do you find a HiSET testing center near you?

  1. Open HiSET’s finder and search by your location.
  2. Check your state’s HiSET page. Some states have rules about where you test, such as Maine, which requires at least one subtest at a Maine center for a Maine credential.
  3. Ask the center whether it offers paper, computer or both, and what it charges. Test center fees aren’t refunded.
  4. Book through your myHiSET account, or with the center if your state works that way.

Checking in at a HiSET test center

Arrive at least 30 minutes early; arriving late can cost you your seat and the fee. You may be asked to empty your pockets, show your sleeves and pant legs, and have your glasses checked. Friends and family who drove you can’t wait in the building or on its grounds.

What you can’t take into the room

  • Phones, smart watches, earbuds and any other electronic device
  • Your own calculator. The center provides one.
  • Bags, wallets, notebooks, pens and pencils
  • Food, drinks and gum
  • Hoodies, jackets, scarves and other loose outer layers

You get 3 sheets of scratch paper and a pencil, which you hand back at the end. Some centers have lockers, but not all, so ask ahead.
