Give way rules in QLD

To give way means slowing down, and stopping if you need to, so you don't cause a crash. At a crossroad with no signs, lines or lights you give way to the right, and at a T-intersection you give way to traffic on the road that continues. The give way rules in QLD also apply in plenty of places with no sign at all, and they make up a third of the road rules test.

What are the give way rules at QLD intersections?

TMR's give way page sets these out:

  • Uncontrolled crossroads, with no traffic lights, lines or signs: give way to vehicles on your right
  • Turning right at an uncontrolled crossroad: give way to oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left, as well
  • T-intersections: if you're on the road that ends, give way to all vehicles on the road that continues through, except vehicles doing a U-turn
  • Slip lanes: give way to all traffic on the road you're entering, except U-turners, and to pedestrians and bike or scooter riders on the slip lane

Stop and give way signs and lines

At a give way sign, you give way and check it's safe before you go. At a stop sign, you stop and give way to all other vehicles. Where one road has a stop sign and the other a give way sign, both drivers give way to other vehicles before giving way to each other. Stop and give way lines painted on the road mean the same as the signs, even with no sign put up.

Pedestrians, bikes and buses

When you turn into a road, give way to pedestrians and bike or scooter riders on it or about to cross it, including people crossing on a green walk signal at traffic lights.

In a built-up area with a speed limit of 70 km/h or less, give way to a bus with a give way to buses sign on its back right-hand side when it's signalling to pull out from a stop, zone or bay, or from the road shoulder. Take extra care near school buses, especially when their yellow lights are flashing.

Pulling out, driveways and U-turns

Pulling out from the side of the road or a median strip, you give way to all other vehicles and signal for at least 5 seconds. Coming out of a driveway or private property, forwards or in reverse, you give way to pedestrians and bike or scooter riders on the footpath or road, and to vehicles on the road you're entering. On a U-turn, you give way to all other vehicles.

Giving way on the road rules test

The written test has a section of 10 giving way questions, and you need at least 9 right. A strong score on the other 20 questions won't make up for a third mistake here.
