PrepL: the QLD learners test online

PrepL is TMR's online course, and passing it counts in place of the written road rules test. It takes about 4 to 6 hours, you can enrol from 15 years and 11 months, and it ends in a 30-question test where you need 90%. If you're after the QLD learners test online, this is it: the written test itself is only given in person.

Can you do the QLD learners test online?

Yes, through PrepL. TMR says it replaces the 30-question paper test, and that until PrepL becomes mandatory you can choose either one. It hasn't published a date for that. Once it is mandatory, people with no internet access at home or somewhere like a school or library may be able to sit the written test instead. Call 13 23 80 to ask.

How PrepL works

The course has three sections: your driving attitude, signs and rules, and sharing the road with others. You work through activities, videos and scenarios, with short assessments that unlock as you go, and finish with the final test.

You can work at your own pace on a phone, tablet or computer. TMR says you need a download speed of 1.5mbps and that the full course downloads about 1.5GB as you progress. You have 12 months from enrolment to finish. If you fail the final test, you wait 24 hours before trying again, and you don't pay again. While you wait, you can go back through the course and look at what you got wrong.

Enrolling in PrepL

To enrol you need to be at least 15 years and 11 months old, so you can finish in time to get your learner licence on your 16th birthday, and to have a Queensland residential address. You set up an account with your own email address, not a shared one.

You also need a TMR customer reference number. If you've ever had a fine, a photo ID card or a marine licence, you may already have one, and if you don't, one is issued when you enrol. The fee is $29.70 as at 1 July 2026, it isn't refundable, and online you pay by credit or debit card.

Getting your learner licence after PrepL

TMR needs to see your proof of identity before it can issue the licence, and you can do that at any stage of PrepL. If you've done it before you pass, you can apply for the licence online and have it posted. A printed or electronic copy of your driver licence receipt lets you start supervised driving straight away.

Do it yourself

If someone else completes PrepL for you, TMR can cancel your enrolment. It says the person who did it may face a penalty of more than $6,900, and can't re-enrol for 6 months.

Which other Queensland tests are online

The hazard perception test is online too, and you can take it once you've held your learner licence for 6 months. The practical driving test isn't: you drive your own car with an examiner.
