Getting a manual licence in QLD after an automatic

You pass a practical driving test in a manual car. That's how TMR removes the automatic condition, which shows as class CA on a car licence. If you already hold a P or open licence, there's no minimum wait before you upgrade. While you learn to get a manual licence in QLD, TMR's rules for learning a new class apply: a supervisor beside you and L plates on the car.

How do you get a manual licence in QLD after an automatic?

TMR's upgrade table says there's no minimum time for moving from an automatic to a manual car licence if you already hold a P or open licence.

  1. Learn in a manual car with a supervisor who has held an open licence for that class for at least a year, and display L plates.
  2. Book a practical driving test and take it in a manual car. The fee is $69.40 as at 1 July 2026.
  3. Pass, and the automatic condition comes off your licence.

Rules while you learn a manual

TMR's rules for learning a higher class, which include automatic-only drivers learning a manual, put your alcohol limit at zero while you learn, and you follow any conditions on your licence. TMR says an unaccompanied learner gets 4 demerit points and a fine of over $270.

What CA and A mean

CA is a class C licence limited to automatics. With CA, you can't drive a manual vehicle in any class. An A condition on other classes means automatic only for those classes, and TMR notes it doesn't necessarily cover every class on your licence.
