Learner licence renewal in QLD

You can renew a learner licence online for another 3 years, but not early: TMR's online service won't take it more than 6 weeks before it expires. As at 1 July 2026 it costs $80.15. Learner licence renewal in QLD stops being possible once a licence has been expired for 5 years, and then you apply for a new one.

How does online learner licence renewal work in QLD?

You use TMR's online renewal service, and the new licence runs for 3 years. TMR says learner licences can't be renewed early, and the online service won't renew any licence more than 6 weeks before it expires. Check your renewal notice first, because some renewals can't be done online. TMR sends notices about 6 weeks before your licence expires.

You can't renew online if you need a new photo, since photos are valid for 10 years, if you need a medical certificate that TMR doesn't have, if you've changed your name, if your licence is suspended or cancelled, or if you've moved away from Queensland for good. You'll need your licence details, a Queensland address and a Visa or MasterCard. BPAY isn't accepted.

Renewing in person

At a transport and motoring customer service centre, bring your licence, or proof of identity if it's been lost or stolen, and any change of name document. You'll declare that you're medically fit to drive, pay the fee, and may have a new photo taken.

If your learner licence has expired

Don't drive on it. You can renew within 5 years of the expiry date. If it's been expired for more than 2 years, it no longer counts as proof of identity, so bring 3 identity documents. Once it's been expired for 5 years or more, you can't renew it, and you apply for a learner licence again.

Renewing a P or open licence

Provisional and open licences can be renewed online for 1 to 5 years, and the fee depends on the length you choose. For the full 5 years you may need to visit a centre for a new photo and signature. Your new card should arrive within 21 days, and if it doesn't, contact TMR within 90 days of renewing to avoid a replacement fee.
