The QLD logbook: 100 hours before your driving test

If you're under 25, you need at least 100 hours of supervised driving on Australian roads, including at least 10 hours at night, recorded and approved before your practical test. You can keep your QLD logbook in TMR's free app, on paper, or both. Submit it at least 12 business days before your driving test.

Who needs a QLD logbook?

Learner drivers under 25. Night hours are hours driven between sunset and sunrise. If you're 25 or older, you don't need one, though TMR recommends keeping one so you know you've had enough practice before the test.

App, paper or both

The Queensland Learner Logbook app is free on the App Store and Google Play, and your supervisor doesn't need to download it. YLOODrive is the only other app TMR currently approves. Paper logbooks come from transport and motoring customer service centres. You can use both, as long as you record each trip only once, and the app's Change hours setting helps you split the 100 hours between them.

What each trip needs

Every trip has to be signed or approved by your supervisor, and must show:

  • The date, start and finish times, and minutes driven
  • Whether it was day or night
  • Where you started and finished
  • The car's number plate
  • Odometer readings at the start and finish
  • Your supervisor's name and contact details
  • Whether the supervisor was an accredited driver trainer

Hours with a driving instructor

Each hour of daytime driving with an accredited driver trainer counts as 3 logbook hours, for up to 10 actual hours, or 30 logbook hours. After that, trainer hours count as the time you actually drove. A night trip with a trainer counts as triple time or as night hours, not both: an hour from 7 to 8 pm can be 3 daytime hours or 1 night hour.

Submitting your logbook

Once you reach your hours, submit it at least 12 business days before your driving test. In the app there's a Submit logbook button on the Summary screen. A paper logbook goes in at any Australia Post outlet, which sends it on to TMR. If you used both, TMR starts reviewing once it has both, and contacts you to say whether it's approved.

False or misleading entries can mean a fine, and you may not be able to take the practical test until 6 weeks after a corrected logbook is approved.

Logbook exemptions

TMR grants exemptions only in some limited circumstances. The application costs $51.45 as at 1 July 2026, and you can apply online. If you get one, you must hold your learner licence for at least 2 years before you take the driving test.

Hours driven outside Queensland

Supervised hours on a car learner licence in another Australian state or territory, or in New Zealand, can count for up to 100 hours. Some countries, including the UK, the USA, Canada, Japan and Singapore, can count for up to 50. You apply with the Prior Driving Experience Application, form F4450. Don't record trips driven outside Australia in your logbook.
