Learning to drive in QLD: where to study the road rules

Start with the rules, not the car. TMR says the written test's questions come from Your keys to driving in Queensland, so that's the book to read, and qld.gov.au explains the same rules one topic at a time. If you'd rather learn on a screen, PrepL is TMR's own course and counts in place of the written test. Once you're on your Ls, learning to drive in QLD means at least 100 logbook hours if you're under 25.

Which study option suits you when learning to drive in QLD?

If you like reading, use the handbook and qld.gov.au. TMR calls Your keys to driving in Queensland the road rules handbook for all drivers, learners included.

If you want structure, PrepL takes about 4 to 6 hours, with activities, videos and scenarios, and you have 12 months to finish. It costs $29.70, the same as the written test, and ends in its own 30-question test.

Private apps are handy for drilling questions on your phone near the end. None of them are TMR's, so check anything that surprises you against the handbook.

For the driving itself, TMR's advice on driving schools is to ask to see the trainer's Industry Authority card, which shows they're accredited, and to check the car has dual controls, which the law requires. It suggests lessons of 1 to 2 hours.

A study path, from first read to your Ls

One way to work through it:

  1. Read the road rules in the handbook or on qld.gov.au, starting with giving way. You can miss only one of the 10 giving way questions.
  2. Try TMR's online practice test and the 20 questions on our practice test page, and reread anything you got wrong.
  3. Choose your route: sit the written test at a customer service centre from 16, or enrol in PrepL from 15 years and 11 months.
  4. Get your proof of identity together. Originals only.
  5. Once you have your learner licence, start logging supervised hours. Daytime hours with an accredited driver trainer count triple, up to 10 actual hours.
