QLD licence classes, types and codes

A class C licence covers cars up to 4.5 tonnes that carry no more than 12 adults, and CA is the same but automatic only. Trucks and buses go up through LR, MR, HR, HC and MC, and motorcycles are RE and R. Alongside the QLD licence classes, TMR uses licence types, such as L for learner and O for open, and condition codes like S for glasses.

Which QLD licence classes cover cars?

Class C lets you drive cars and similar vehicles: anything that isn't a motorcycle, has a gross vehicle mass of no more than 4.5 tonnes, and is built or fitted to carry no more than 12 adults, including the driver. It also covers mopeds, but you can't carry a passenger on a moped with a car licence. Class CA is the same, limited to automatic vehicles.

Truck and bus classes

Each heavy class includes everything in the classes below it:

ClassAdds
LR, light rigidBuses or trucks of no more than 8 tonnes, and towing a trailer of up to 9 tonnes
MR, medium rigidBuses or trucks over 8 tonnes with no more than 2 axles
HR, heavy rigidBuses or trucks over 8 tonnes with more than 2 axles, and articulated buses
HC, heavy combinationTrucks over 8 tonnes towing a trailer of more than 9 tonnes
MC, multi-combinationB-doubles and road trains

Motorcycle classes

RE covers mopeds and learner approved motorcycles, and R covers motorcycles of any engine size. Both include 2 and 3 wheelers, with or without a trailer.

What does class C, type O mean on a QLD licence?

TMR's list of licence types shows O as an open licence, so class C with type O is an open car licence. The other types it lists are L for a learner licence, P for a probationary or restricted licence, and P1 or P2 for a provisional, probationary or restricted licence.

Condition codes

A condition code limits how you can drive:

  • A: automatic vehicles only. For a car licence this shows as class CA instead
  • B: vehicles with a synchromesh gearbox only
  • I: an alcohol interlock, after a high-risk drink driving conviction
  • M: you carry a current medical certificate and follow it
  • RD: a returning driver, who may only learn the class on their certificate
  • S: you must wear glasses or contact lenses
  • V: you may only drive a vehicle fitted with the driver aids TMR has set out
