The ID you need to get your learners in QLD

TMR says most people need 3 original documents: one showing your legal name and date of birth, such as a full birth certificate or a passport, one showing you use that name, such as a Medicare card, and a third from either group. That's the ID you need to get your learners in QLD if you don't already hold a Queensland driver licence or photo ID card. TMR doesn't accept photocopies, scans or certified copies.

What ID do I need to get my learners in QLD?

It depends on what you already have. If you hold a Queensland photo ID card, driver licence or marine licence indicator that's current or expired less than 2 years ago, that one card is enough. You can show the card or the Queensland Digital Licence app.

If not, you need 1 Category A document, 1 Category B document, and 1 more from either. Add a Category C document if your Queensland home address isn't on the others, and a Category D document if your name is different on any of them. TMR says most people show 3, and some need up to 5.

Category A and Category B documents

TMR's list for people under 18 gives these as the documents you're most likely to have. Category A proves your legal name and date of birth:

  • A full Australian birth certificate, not an extract or a commemorative certificate
  • An Australian or overseas passport, current or expired less than 2 years ago
  • An Australian citizenship or naturalisation certificate
  • An ImmiCard, current or expired less than 4 years ago

Category B shows you use your name, and the name must match your Category A document. It can be a Medicare card that lists you, a student ID card with your photo, a debit, EFTPOS or credit card in your name, or a current BasicsCard. A school certificate or statement of enrolment doesn't count. A Medicare card has to be shown in person, and a digital one through the app, not as a screenshot.

TMR's full list for adults has more options in each category.

Proving your Queensland address

If your address isn't on your other documents, bring one Category C document, such as a tax notice of assessment from the ATO with your tax file number blocked out, or a letter from Centrelink or Services Australia sent in the past 6 months. TMR doesn't accept bank statements or mobile phone bills.

Under 18 with nothing in your name? TMR's list gives three ways round it: wear your school uniform to the centre, show your student ID card, or bring a parent or guardian whose Queensland driver licence shows the same address.

If your name has changed

Bring an Australian change of name certificate or an amended Australian birth certificate from a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Adults can also use documents such as a marriage certificate.

Everything else to bring

Along with your ID, TMR's learner licence page lists:

  • The written road rules test fee, $29.70, unless you've passed PrepL
  • The learner licence fee, $80.15
  • A medical certificate saying you're fit to drive, if you have a condition that needs one
  • Driver licence application form F3000, but only at a police station or QGAP office. Customer service centres no longer need it
