Where you can't do a U-turn
TMR lists these places:
- Across a single or double continuous centre line
- Across a continuous centre line that has a broken line to its right, when you're on the continuous side
- Over a painted island in the centre of the road
- At an intersection without traffic lights, or a break in a centre island, where a no U-turn sign is shown
Across a broken centre line, or double broken lines, you can make a U-turn if it's safe.
U-turns at traffic lights and crossings
At traffic lights, children's crossings, level crossings, marked foot crossings and pedestrian crossings, you can only make a U-turn where a U-turn permitted sign is displayed. No sign means no U-turn.
What do the U-turn rules in QLD say about giving way?
That you give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians. This holds even when the other drivers face a give way or stop sign and you don't. Before you start, make sure you can see approaching traffic clearly and that you won't hold anyone up.
U-turns at roundabouts
Use the right lane, unless road markings say otherwise. Signal right as you approach and enter, then signal left before you leave, and switch your indicator off once you're out.
