Keep left unless overtaking in QLD

On a multi-lane road with a limit of 90 km/h or more, you stay out of the right-hand lane unless you're overtaking or another exception applies. The same goes on any multi-lane road with a keep left unless overtaking sign. In QLD, on a single-lane road, you keep as close to the left as is practical.

When does keep left unless overtaking apply in QLD?

On multi-lane roads where the speed limit is 90 km/h or more, or where a keep left unless overtaking sign is shown. On a road with a single lane each way, you keep as close as practical to the left side.

When you can use the right lane

TMR lists six times you can drive in the right-hand lane on those roads:

  • Overtaking
  • Turning right
  • Making a U-turn
  • Avoiding an obstruction
  • Driving in congested traffic
  • Using a special purpose lane you're allowed to use

Overtaking on the left

TMR allows overtaking on the left on all multi-lane roads, in a marked lane to the left of the other vehicle. Otherwise, you can only pass on the left when it's safe and the vehicle ahead is turning right or making a U-turn from the centre of the road with its right indicator on, or is stopped. The last exception is a motorcycle lane filtering.

Overtaking safely

Overtake only when you can see oncoming traffic clearly, it's safe, and the signs and road markings allow it. You can never go over the speed limit to overtake. At a pedestrian or children's crossing, you can't pass a vehicle going your way that has stopped or is stopping there.

Passing a bike or scooter rider, leave at least 1 m in a zone of 60 km/h or less, and at least 1.5 m where the limit is higher. If you can't do that safely, wait behind them.
