The Utah driving age: permit at 15, license at 16

The Utah driving age is 15 for a learner permit and 16 for a license. If you get your permit at 15, you hold it for six months and until you turn 16. What else you need changes with age: teens must take driver education, while adults 19 and over can skip it by holding the permit longer.

Who can sit next to you

Under 18, the person next to you must be a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent or guardian, an approved driving instructor, or the licensed adult who signed for your permit. Another licensed adult 21 or older can supervise if your parent isn't a licensed driver and gives them a note. At 18 and over, it's any licensed driver 21 or older.

Rules that end when you turn 18 or 21

  • Until 18, a parent or guardian must sign for financial responsibility. If they withdraw, the license becomes invalid and you wait until 18 to reapply.
  • Under 18, you can only use a phone while driving for emergencies, reporting a hazard or crime, or talking with a parent.
  • Under 21, you get a provisional license, which expires after five years, and a stricter point limit: 70 points in three years.
  • Under 21, any measurable alcohol costs you your driving privileges.

Other age limits

You can take the road test at 16 at a division office, or at 15 with a third-party tester or high school program, though you can't get the license until 16. A motorcycle endorsement needs you to be 16 with a Class D license. A commercial license needs you to be 18 and to have held a Class D license for a year.
