Utah permit test study guide: where to learn

The best Utah permit test study guide is the free one: the 2026 Utah Driver Handbook, since every question on the test comes from it. Add the Driver License Division's 30-question online practice test and its visual handbook with short videos. For more practice, compare the apps and driving schools Utah learners use, checked in October 2026.

What's the best Utah permit test study guide?

The handbook itself. The Driver License Division doesn't publish a separate study guide, and every question on the 50-question test is drawn from the 2026 Utah Driver Handbook. Its Section 3 covers the permit and teen rules and Section 9 the rules of the road, and that's where most of the numbers on the test are.

How to choose

If you're 15 to 18, driver education isn't optional, so the real choice is where to take it. A high school course is 27 classroom hours, a private driving school 18, and an approved online course 30. All three add 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor.

At 19 or older you can skip driver education. The trade-off is time: without it you hold your permit for 90 days and log 40 practice hours, 10 after sunset. With it, there's no 90-day wait.

The division's practice test is free and you can take it as many times as you like. A paid app is worth it only once that stops teaching you anything new and you want more questions to drill. Check when the app was last updated, because Utah changed several rules on May 6, 2026.

A study path that works

  1. Read the Utah Driver Handbook, starting with Sections 3 and 9.
  2. Take the division's practice test, then our 20 questions, and reread the sections behind anything you missed.
  3. Pass the written test and get your permit.
  4. Do the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam. You need 100%, but you can retake it as often as you need.
  5. Before your road practice, watch the division's driving skills test videos for each maneuver.
