Drivers ed in Utah: who needs it and how many hours

Drivers ed in Utah is required for everyone who gets a license between 15 and 18. You do a classroom part, at a high school, a private driving school or online, plus 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor. On top of that, you drive 40 hours with a parent, 10 of them after sunset. At 19 and over it's optional.

How many hours is drivers ed in Utah?

State law doesn't require the observation hours, but Utah high schools include them and some private schools do too. Your school district may let you do the classroom part at school, through home study or electronic high school, and the driving part with a private school.

Choosing a course

The State Office of Education approves high school courses, and the Driver License Division approves private schools and online courses. The division publishes lists of both. When you finish, your results are sent to the division for you, and an approved course can also give you the road test.

Drivers education in Utah at 19 or older

If you've never been licensed and you're 19 or older, you can skip drivers education. You'd then hold your permit for 90 days and log 40 hours, 10 after sunset. Or you take an approved course and skip the 90-day wait.

Took drivers ed in another state?

An out-of-state course counts if it meets Utah's hours and you bring a completed DLD 200 form. Out-of-state online or home study certificates aren't accepted. You can make up missing hours at an approved Utah school.
