How many questions are on the permit test in Utah?

It depends on whether you've had a license before: if you haven't, you get 50 questions, closed book. If you have, it's 25, open book. Either way you need 80% to pass, and the test isn't timed. So for a teen asking how many questions are on the permit test in Utah, the answer is 50.

All questions come from the Utah Driver Handbook. The Driver License Division doesn't publish how the questions are split between topics.

How many questions are on the permit test in Utah if you're moving from another state?

25, open book, as long as you have a license from another state or country. You still need 80%. You skip the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam, but the examiner may ask you to take a road test, and you hand in your old U.S. license when you apply.

How long does it take?

There's no time limit. The handbook says the written knowledge test generally takes 30 to 45 minutes. Arrive on time for your appointment anyway, because the office also needs to check your documents, take your photo and do your eye test.

How many times can you take it?

You can take two written tests in one day if the office can fit you in. If you need to come back another day, book a written retest appointment. Your fee pays for up to three tries within 12 months. After a third fail, you pay again for three more.

The second test: 40 questions you must get all right

If you've never been licensed, there's one more written test before your license: the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam. It's 40 questions in four sections of 10, taken online, and you need 100%. You can retake it as often as you need. Half of its questions are about the main causes of traffic deaths in Utah.
