Utah · Permit test

Can you take the Utah permit test online?

No, you can't take the Utah permit test online. The 50-question written knowledge test is taken in person at a Driver License Division office, at your learner permit appointment. Plenty of other steps are online, though: the application, the official practice test, the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam you need for your license, and many renewals.

Is any part of the Utah permit test online?

You fill in the application and book the appointment online, but the test itself is at the office, after your eye test and document check. The only official test you take from home is the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam, and it comes later, after you have your permit.

The Traffic Safety and Trends Exam

If you've never been licensed, you must pass this exam before you get a Class D license. It's online only, 40 questions in four sections of 10, and you need 100%. You can stop after a section and come back, and you can retake it as many times as you need. You'll need your learner permit number to sign in. The division suggests finishing it before your driving test.

What else you can do online

  • Take the division's free 30-question practice test.
  • Read the Utah Driver Handbook as a PDF, or the visual handbook with videos.
  • Renew a regular license if you got a PIN letter in the mail.
  • Change your address within 10 days of moving.
  • Order a copy of your driving record.

Watch out for imitation sites

The handbook warns about sites that copy the look of the division but don't end in .gov. Official pages are on dld.utah.gov and secure.utah.gov.
