The Utah point system for drivers

The Utah point system adds points to your record for moving violations. If you're 21 or older and reach 200 points in three years, you're called to a hearing. Under 21, the limit is 70 points. A hearing can end in probation, a defensive driving course, or a suspension of one month to a year.

How many points is each ticket in the Utah point system?

Speeding, depending on how fast35-75
Failure to yield, tailgating, wrong side of the road, wrong way on a one-way street60

The lower limit for drivers under 21

Licenses for drivers under 21 are provisional, and they carry the lower limit of 70 points in three years instead of 200. Two speeding tickets are enough to reach the 70-point limit.

How Utah driving points come off

  • Drive one full year without a moving violation conviction and half your points are removed.
  • Two years in a row without one and all points are removed.
  • Each conviction's points drop off three years after the violation.
  • A defensive driving course recommended by the division removes 50 points, once every three years. It isn't the same as court traffic school.
