How to get a Utah commercial driver's license

To get a Utah commercial driver's license (CDL), you need to be at least 18 and have held a Class D license for a year. You pass the CDL written tests to get a commercial learner permit (CLP), finish entry-level driver training, hold the CLP for 14 days, then pass the skills test. All CDL tests are in English only.

How do you get a Utah commercial drivers license?

  1. Have your doctor submit your Medical Examiner's Certificate to the division electronically.
  2. Book a CDL appointment and pay $52, plus $9 for each endorsement, as of October 2026.
  3. Pass the written tests for the class you want. That gives you a CLP, valid for 180 days.
  4. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training with a provider on the federal training registry.
  5. Hold the CLP for 14 days, then pass the skills test at a division office or with a CDL third-party tester.

You need 80% on each, and they're closed book. The application fee covers two tries at each core test, then it's $26 per retest. Endorsement tests cost $9 for two tries. If you skip air brakes, your license gets an L restriction.

The Utah CDL handbook

All questions come from the Utah Commercial Driver Manual, free as a PDF from the division. Read the sections for your class and endorsements, and sections 11, 12 and 13 for the skills test.

Classes and limits

Class A covers combinations of 26,001 pounds or more pulling over 10,000 pounds. Class B covers single vehicles over 26,000 pounds. Class C covers smaller vehicles carrying 16 or more people or placarded hazardous materials. Drivers 18 to 20 with Class A or B are limited to driving within Utah. The Farmington, Logan and Tooele offices don't handle CDLs, and since January 20, 2026 Utah has paused new non-domiciled CDLs.
