The CLEP Biology exam

Expect about 115 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. The CLEP Biology exam matches a full year of college general biology, not one semester, which is why ACE recommends 6 semester hours for a score of 50. That’s twice what it suggests for one-semester exams like College Algebra. Your college can still set a different score or give less credit.

What’s on the CLEP Biology exam?

Three areas, each about a third of the questions.

AreaShareWhat it includes
Molecular and cellular biology33%Chemistry of living things, cells, enzymes, energy transformations, cell division, the chemical nature of the gene
Organismal biology34%Structure and reproduction of plants and animals, heredity
Population biology33%Ecology, evolution, behavior, social biology

Is there a CLEP anatomy and physiology exam?

No. Anatomy and physiology isn’t one of the 34 CLEP subjects. The nearest thing is organismal biology, about a third of this exam, which covers how plants and animals are built and how they reproduce. Whether that counts toward an A&P requirement is your college’s call, so ask before you register.

Preparing for the Biology exam

Start with College Board’s free Biology sample questions. They show the style but don’t explain the answers. The official CLEP Biology Examination Guide is a $10 PDF with more practice questions. Our free practice test has 2 Biology questions with explained answers, one on cells and one on organisms.

If you only need a general education science credit, look at Natural Sciences too. It’s half biology and half physical science, also 6 semester hours at a 50.
