The College Algebra CLEP exam

Expect about 60 questions in 90 minutes, with a scientific calculator built into the screen the whole time. College Algebra CLEP matches a one-semester algebra course, and ACE recommends 3 semester hours for a score of 50. About half the questions are routine problems and half check that you understand the ideas, and there’s little weight on arithmetic.

What’s on the College Algebra CLEP?

AreaShareWhat it includes
Functions and their properties30%Domain and range, graphs and transformations, inverse functions; linear, polynomial (up to degree 5), rational, absolute value, power, exponential, logarithmic and piecewise functions
Algebraic operations25%Exponents, factoring and expanding polynomials, algebraic expressions, absolute value, properties of logarithms
Equations and inequalities25%Linear, quadratic and absolute value equations and inequalities, systems, exponential and logarithmic equations
Number systems and operations20%Real and complex numbers, factorials and the binomial theorem

The on-screen calculator

It’s a TI-30XS MultiView, a scientific calculator that doesn’t graph. Open it from the Calculator icon; the Help icon has a Calculator tab on how to use it. College Board expects you to know when a question needs it and when it doesn’t. ETS has a free online copy to practice with.

Is there a free College Algebra CLEP practice test?

College Board has free College Algebra sample questions, though they don’t explain the answers, and sells the official College Algebra Examination Guide as a $10 PDF. Our own free CLEP practice test has 3 College Algebra questions, on equations and functions, with every answer explained.

Not sure this is the right math exam? Precalculus and College Mathematics are different courses, and colleges place them differently.
