What’s on the CLEP Chemistry exam?
| Topic | Share of questions |
|---|---|
| Structure of matter | 20% |
| States of matter | 19% |
| Descriptive chemistry | 14% |
| Reaction types | 12% |
| Equations and stoichiometry | 10% |
| Experimental chemistry | 9% |
| Equilibrium | 7% |
| Thermodynamics | 5% |
| Kinetics | 4% |
Structure and states of matter are almost 40% between them, so they’re worth the most study time. Kinetics and thermodynamics are under 10% together.
The calculator and periodic table
The calculator is a TI-30XS MultiView, a scientific model that doesn’t graph. Open it from the Calculator icon. The periodic table is under the Help icon, on the Periodic Table tab. ETS has a free online version of the same calculator, so you can get used to it before test day.
Free and official prep for CLEP Chemistry
College Board has free Chemistry sample questions, without explanations, and a $10 CLEP Chemistry Examination Guide as a PDF. If you need science credit but aren’t a science major, Natural Sciences might suit you better: it covers chemistry as one part of a broader survey.
