The French CLEP exam

It’s one test of about 121 questions in 90 minutes that covers what you’d learn in two to three semesters of college French. Your score sets the level: ACE recommends 6 semester hours for a 50 on the French CLEP exam and 9 for a 59. There’s no writing or speaking section.

Three timed sections

SectionShareWhat you do
Listening: rejoinders15%Pick the best reply to short spoken prompts
Listening: dialogues and narratives25%Answer questions about longer recordings
Reading60%Sentences (10%), short cloze passages (20%), passages and real-world texts (30%)

Every question counts the same toward your score, whichever section it’s in. The French exam page has a sample listening exercise as an MP3, which is the easiest way to hear the format.

How does the French CLEP exam decide your level?

You don’t choose a level when you register. You take the same test, and a 59 instead of a 50 is what moves you up to Level 2. Ask your college which level it needs and what score it uses, since it can differ from ACE.
