DANTES CLEP tests: free exams for service members

If you’re eligible, DANTES pays the exam fee on your first try at each CLEP exam, and DANTES-funded and on-base test centers waive their administration fee. A DANTES CLEP test is the same exam anyone takes; only the payment is different. You also get the official exam guide for that subject free.

Who qualifies for military CLEP funding

  • Active duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard
  • National Guard and Reserve members
  • Coast Guard spouses, active and reserve
  • Eligible SpouseWorks participants
  • Air Force civilian employees, at on-base or fully funded centers only

Civil service employees, inactive Guard or Reserve members, and spouses and dependents not on that list aren’t funded. For questions about eligibility, call DANTES at 850-452-1919.

How do you register for a DANTES CLEP test?

When you register in My CLEP, say you’re eligible for DANTES funding and answer the military questions. Then test at a DANTES-funded or on-base center to skip the administration fee. Bring your Geneva Conventions Identification Card.

DANTES pays once per subject. If you need to retake, wait three months and pay the exam and administration fees yourself.

Veterans and military transcripts

Depending on their benefits, some veterans can be fully reimbursed for exam and administration fees under the GI Bill; the VA’s national testing page has the details.

Scores from DANTES-funded exams go out as military transcripts through Parchment, not College Board. College Board’s transcript page gives the fee as $30 in one place and $40 in another, so check the price in Parchment before you order.

Rules and fees can change, so check the official site before your test.
