How do you check what colleges accept CLEP exams?
Search by college name or by location. When a college has posted its policy, you’ll see a table of the exams it gives credit for, the score it wants for each, and the credit hours it awards. No results? Try another name or check the college’s website.
Questions to ask your college
- Does it give credit for the exam you want to take?
- Does that credit count toward your degree?
- Will a passing score let you skip a required course?
- Does a course you’ve already taken in the subject rule out CLEP credit?
That last one matters: some colleges won’t give CLEP credit if you’ve already attempted a similar college course. An academic adviser can answer these; service members can ask an education services officer.
Sending CLEP scores and transcripts
When you register you can send your score to 2 colleges free. After that, order a transcript in My CLEP, under Scores, for $20 per college, paid by debit or credit card. Transcript orders can’t be canceled or changed, so check the college’s policy before you send one.
Scores from exams taken on or after July 1, 2022 stay available for 10 years, and older ones for 20. Scores for DANTES-funded exams go through Parchment instead.
