The CLEP Precalculus exam

There are about 48 questions in two timed parts: 25 in about 50 minutes with a graphing calculator, then 23 in about 40 minutes without one. CLEP Precalculus checks that you’re ready for a first-semester calculus course, and ACE recommends 3 semester hours for a score of 50. Most questions are multiple choice, but some ask you to type in a number.

What’s on the Precalculus CLEP?

AreaShare
Representations of functions: symbolic, graphical and tabular30%
Algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities20%
Functions: concept, properties and operations15%
Trigonometry and its applications15%
Analytic geometry10%
Functions as models10%

The functions cover linear, quadratic, absolute value, square root, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric and piecewise-defined.

Trigonometry runs through the whole test

Trig is only 15% as its own area, but College Board says roughly 30% to 40% of all questions need right-triangle trigonometry or the properties of trig functions. If trig is your weak spot, fix it first.

The calculator, and pre calc CLEP practice

The calculator is a TI-84 Plus CE built into the software, and it’s only there in the first part. Only some of those questions need it. For practice, College Board has free Precalculus sample questions and a $10 Precalculus Examination Guide. Our 20-question practice test has College Algebra questions but none from Precalculus.

Already past precalc? The Calculus exam carries 4 semester hours at a 50, one more than Precalculus.
