Elementary education Praxis tests: 5001 and the new Fundamentals

The current elementary education Praxis test is Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001): four separately timed subtests, 245 questions in 4 hours 35 minutes, $180 for all four. ETS says its new Elementary Education Fundamentals tests (8002 to 8006), launching in spring 2026, will replace 5001, but it hasn’t given a date, and 5001 is still on the 2026-2027 schedule.

  • Where a state has adopted Praxis Steps, you can take or retake one content category at a time. Steps for 8006 come in 2027.
  • From September 1, 2026, each category is timed separately when you take a full test.
  • Scores for tests taken after September 6, 2026 are due within 7 calendar days.

Which elementary test does your state want?

  • Louisiana: the four 5001 subtests, or the same subjects from its own 7001 series, mixed if you like, plus a reading test.
  • New Jersey: the four 5001 subtests for the Elementary School Teacher K-6 certificate.
  • Colorado: Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205) and the elementary math test 5903, not 5001.
  • Alabama: also Pearson’s Foundations of Reading for elementary certificates.

Each state page has the scores it lists.
