Praxis PLT: Principles of Learning and Teaching

The Praxis PLT, Principles of Learning and Teaching, tests how you teach rather than a subject. It comes in four grade bands: Early Childhood (5621), Grades K-6 (5622), Grades 5-9 (5623) and Grades 7-12 (5624), and ETS also lists PreK-12 (5625). Each of the four takes 2 hours, with 70 multiple-choice questions and 4 written answers about two case histories, and costs $156.

The four grade-band tests share the same content categories. Each test has questions for its own grade range plus some that apply to every grade.

ETS’s K-6 and 5-9 Study Companions suggest about 70 minutes for the multiple-choice part and about 50 for the written part. The two parts aren’t timed separately, so pace yourself.

Which states ask for the PLT?

Not every state uses it, and some use it only for certain routes. As of October 2026:

  • Louisiana: required, matched to your grade band: Early Childhood for birth to kindergarten and PreK-3, K-6 for grades 1-5, 5-9 for middle school and 7-12 for grades 6-12.
  • Nevada: required for every area except elementary education.
  • Missouri: teachers on a Temporary Authorization Certificate must pass a PLT and a content test.
  • Alabama: only for computer science, gifted education, health science and technical education; the edTPA covers other fields.
  • Tennessee: edTPA or PLT, depending on your preparation route.
  • Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Colorado: their current lists don’t include a PLT.
