What is on Praxis Core?
Core Math gives you an on-screen four-function calculator. On Writing, your multiple-choice points and essay points are reported separately. ETS’s Core Combined page doesn’t give a total time or question count of its own; it’s the same three tests on one date.
| Test | Time | Questions | Content categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading (5713) | 85 minutes | 56 multiple-choice, based on passages and statements | Key Ideas and Details 35%; Craft, Structure and Language Skills 30%; Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 35% |
| Writing (5723) | 100 minutes: 40 for questions, then two 30-minute essays | 40 multiple-choice plus 2 essays | Text Types, Purposes and Production, with the essays, 60%; Language and Research Skills 40% |
| Mathematics (5733) | 90 minutes | 56: pick one answer, pick one or more, or type a number | Number and Quantity 36%; Data, Statistics and Probability 32%; Algebra and Geometry 32% |
Do you need Praxis Core in your state?
It depends on the state, and the rules differ a lot. As of October 2026:
- Connecticut: required by state law for everyone admitted to an approved preparation program, or approved SAT, ACT or GRE scores instead. The results are used as a diagnostic tool.
- Nevada: required for initial licensing, unless you have an SAT of at least 1100, an ACT of at least 21, or a master’s degree and a GRE score at or above the midpoint.
- Pennsylvania: no longer a certification requirement. Core or PAPA scores are an alternative way into a preparation program.
- New Jersey: a 2024 law ended the basic skills requirement from January 1, 2025, except for the limited CE and CEAS certificates.
- Tennessee: only for admission to preparation programs, not for a license.
- North Carolina: may be required for program entry. Set SAT or ACT scores, or a bachelor’s degree, exempt you.
- Virginia: accepted for entry to Virginia-approved preparation programs.
Your preparation program will tell you which tests and scores it wants.
Is Praxis I the same as Praxis Core?
ETS’s current pages, Study Companions and 2026-27 Bulletin don’t use the name Praxis I at all. Its reading, writing and math tests are called Core. Some state pages still use older names: New Jersey’s basic skills page, for example, accepts PPST/Praxis I scores passed before June 2014. If a form asks for Praxis I scores today, ask the program or state which Core tests it accepts.
Core scores
Each Core test is scored from 100 to 200. Passing scores are set by your state or program, not ETS. ETS’s median Core scores are on our difficulty page.
