Which Tennessee Praxis tests can be waived?
- Since June 1, 2023, content tests aren’t required for initial licensure, renewal or advancement if you complete an approved preparation program or enroll in a job-embedded one. This doesn’t apply to Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205) or Education of Young Children (5024).
- A content test is also waived if your transcript shows an official qualifying major in the area, including biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, physics, Spanish and other world languages.
edTPA or PLT
| Your route | Performance or pedagogy test |
|---|---|
| Tennessee program with student teaching or an internship | edTPA |
| Tennessee program with job-embedded practice | None |
| Out-of-state program, no out-of-state license | edTPA or PLT |
| Out-of-state program and an out-of-state license | None |
If no edTPA exists for your endorsement, you submit a PLT score instead.
Scores and older tests
Tennessee accepts scores only directly from ETS, through TNCompass, and ETS says they must be no more than five years old. Choose code 8190 if you test outside Tennessee or have an out-of-state address. Allow at least two weeks for scores to reach TNCompass.
Some older tests are still accepted for a while: Biology (5235) if taken before December 31, 2023, through December 31, 2026, and Physical Education: Content and Design (5095) if taken by August 31, 2024, through August 31, 2027.
