The main special education Praxis test is Special Education: Foundational Knowledge (5355): 120 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, $130, for people seeking a license to teach special education at any grade from kindergarten to 12. The older Core Knowledge tests 5354 and 5543 aren’t on ETS’s current test list or 2026-2027 schedule.

  • Severe to Profound (5547): 120 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, $130, for students with severe to profound disabilities in grades K-12.
  • Core Knowledge and Severe to Profound Applications (5545): 90 multiple-choice and 3 written questions in 2 hours. It’s on the 2026-2027 schedule in September, December, March and June. Its fee isn’t on its ETS page; check at checkout.
  • ETS also lists Early Childhood/Early Intervention (5692), Deaf and Hard of Hearing (5272), Visual Impairments (5282), Learning Disabilities (5383), Intellectual Disabilities (5322), Behavioral Disorders and Emotional Disturbances (5372) and Teaching Speech to Students with Language Impairments (5881).

Which special education Praxis test do you need?

  • Louisiana: 5355 for mild/moderate, 5547 for significant disabilities, 5692 for early intervention, and 5355 plus 5272 or 5282 for deaf and hard of hearing or visual impairments.
  • Colorado: 5355 for the Special Education Generalist, with 5354 accepted until August 31, 2029, plus 5903 and 5205.
  • Pennsylvania: 5355 for Special Education PK-12, but Pearson PECT modules for PK-8 and 7-12.
  • New Jersey: special education is exempt from a subject test.
