Do you need Praxis Core in North Carolina?
Only if your program requires it, and ETS lists these exemptions:
- A total SAT score of 1100 before March 2016, or 1170 on the redesigned SAT.
- Below that, 550 on Verbal (old SAT) or 600 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing exempts you from Core Reading and Writing; 550 on Math (old) or 570 (redesigned) from Core Math.
- A composite ACT score of 24, or 24 on ACT English (for Reading and Writing) or ACT Math (for Math).
- A bachelor’s degree.
What else North Carolina asks for
- The PPAT or another state-approved performance assessment. ETS lists a PPAT qualifying score of 38 for all areas.
- Some licensure exams are Pearson tests: NCDPI links both Pearson and Praxis for its required exams.
- For student services licenses, NCDPI names the Praxis School Psychology test and the Professional School Counselor test, and the Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision test for some administrator roles.
- If you tested for another state, NCDPI says you must meet the test developer’s recommended passing score, regardless of the other state’s official score.
