Praxis Subject Assessments: the tests for your teaching field

A Praxis Subject Assessment checks what you know about the field you’ll teach or work in. ETS lists over 120 Praxis subject tests, from Agriculture to World Languages, and your state decides which ones you need for each license. The ones we cover run from 2 hours to 4 hours 35 minutes, on a computer at home or at a test center.

What is a Praxis Subject Assessment?

ETS’s 2025-2026 score guide counts several kinds of test as Praxis Subject Assessments: the subject and specialty-area tests, the Content Knowledge for Teaching tests, the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) tests and the ParaPro Assessment. Some are all multiple choice; others add written answers, which take longer to score.

Most are scored from 100 to 200, and each state sets its own passing score for each test.

Is Praxis II the same as a Praxis Subject Assessment?

ETS doesn’t use the name Praxis II on its current pages, in its Study Companions or in its 2026-27 Bulletin. Its tests for a teaching field are called Subject Assessments, or subject tests. If a program or form asks for “Praxis II”, ask which Subject Assessment and code it means.

Which Praxis Subject Assessment do you need?

  1. Find your state and license area on our state pages or ETS’s state requirements page.
  2. Write down the exact test code. Some subjects have more than one test.
  3. Check the code is still current. ETS’s test list no longer includes Social Studies: Content Knowledge (5081), Earth and Space Sciences (5571) or Family and Consumer Sciences (5122); the current versions are 5581, 5572 and 5123. Special Education 5354 and 5543 aren’t on the list either.
  4. Get that test’s free Study Companion before you study.

Other subject tests

ETS’s score guide lists many tests we don’t have pages for, including Agriculture (5701), Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge (5511), French: World Language (5174), German: World Language (5183), Gifted Education (5358), Journalism (5224), School Librarian (5312) and Theatre (5641). Pennsylvania and Arkansas both name Fundamental Subjects (5511) for certain certificates; their rules are on our state pages.
